Amazing place. Very cool old school vibe. I went with my wife & had an old fashioned. She had a manhattan. Both were delicious. She tells me the Sam Spade lamb chops are delicious. Gives me a reason to return. Highly recommended.

LONG wait even with a reservation...BUT...worth it. Incredibly friendly staff paired with delicious food. They sat us upstairs and there was live music which was a real treat! Thank you! We will be sure to return!

Incredibly friendly, great service! And I was even dining alone. Every person I encountered was so kind. And the jazz upstairs was a very fun vibe... had a martini and the tuna tartare that was so delicious! Not just a historic spot, but a quality one too!

Walked into John's Grill, located in a historic building, for lunch by myself on a Sunday at 11:45am opening. I sat at the downstairs bar, the bartenders were cordial, with experienced bartender training a new bartender. Both bartenders very cordial and helpful, while being very busy with drink orders. For drinks, I had the local San Francisco Fort Point Brewing Company KSA, a Kolsch style beer, which was excellent. For food, to start I had the New England Clam Chowder that was served with sour dough bread. The server cracked fresh black pepper as it came to table. The Chowder was excellent consistency and flavor, the sour dough bread that came with it was a great complement, overall very good starter, highly recommended. As a main course, to offset the richness of the chowder, I had the Roasted Beet Salad which has roasted yellow and red beets with candied walnuts, feta cheese, lemon aoli, and micro greens. Overall the meal was excellent, I would highly recommend.

We visited this place back in Oct. 2024. Walking by, we could hear the jazz playing from outside so decided to stop through this iconic restaurant, established back in 1908. So thrilled to grab a table upstairs right next to the band. We weren't very hungry, so ate light by sharing a fish dinner and salad. Food was great! We will be back for the steak next time, Very enjoyable, classy, yet relaxed atmosphere. I highly recommend checking out this spot. The gentleman playing the double bass was awesome, Jeff Saxton, so very talented. Will be back when back in San Fran.

This classic American diner is a must do when in SF. It was very busy on our last visit but despite the rushed service I highly recommend - live jazz, historic memorabilia, great food, and overall ambiance

I love a classic steakhouse... I’ve been to John’s Grill a dozen times, so hear this... True to the classics, John’s is dimly lit with mahogany walls and waiters dressed in black with a tie. John’s Grill, founded in 1908, occupies the same narrow, 3 story building on Ellis Street. The first story has a small bar and cozy dining area with an elevator... The second floor you’ll find the best jazz musicians in the city. This floor is a little more lively. The 3rd floor is more reserved but has all the class of the first 2 floors. Don’t worry - the live jazz music is pumped throughout the restaurant at the perfect volume. John’s takes me back to a time when quality and etiquette mattered. The customer is always right at John’s. Once upon a visit to John’s, they were too busy to seat us immediately, so the waitress suggested we enjoy a drink across the street and she’ll page me when my table was ready - she was very polite, yet it seemed like my only option - I loved it - I don’t want to go somewhere else - I want easy instructions. The steaks are always delicious and cooked to perfection. The staff is professional and full of pride.
